How does Halia® work?

Tabletop core material

Halia® warming uses radiant heat through ultra-thin, low-voltage warming units embedded in various interior surfaces like walls, floors, and furniture. These units, made from a lightweight metal mesh, allow real-time heating control as easily as adjusting lighting.

The system integrates seamlessly into surfaces without adding weight or altering the material’s properties, such as flexibility or breathability. The first products to market containing Halia® radiant warming are made of high-pressure laminates )HPL). No plastics or bonding films are involved, and the manufacturing process maintains the original characteristics of the materials used.

HPL is a material commonly used in a wide range of applications including furniture, like weather proof and robust terrace tables.

Why warming of terrace tables?

In 2021, France banned outdoor heaters at cafés and restaurants. As of March 2022, restaurants, cafés, or bars with a terrace are not allowed to heat them artificially. This is due to the fact that heat lamps and heat systems release a half-million tonnes of CO2 per year, which is equivalent to the annual emissions of 300,000 cars. Similar policies to ban heated terraces have been brought to discussion in other countries and regions.

Prior to the ban, almost 40% of all restaurant meals served in France were served outdoors. The impacts of the ban on restaurant sales is still unclear, but many restaurants have adapted to the ban by enclosing their terraces and providing blankert, tying up significant material resources. Terrace season is now shorter and reportedly less comfortable.

Terrace heaters and heating of air – especially in open spaces – is extremely inefficient and polluting. Also strong heat aimed at the head while rest of the body is cold, is uncomfortable for many people. But keeping customers comfortable and healthy in outdoor dining is critical for the success of restaurants, bars and cafés.

Halia® warming in tables is more sustainable and more comfortable, that is proven in first pilots to increase customer comfort and restaurant sales. The maximum power consumption of a Halia warming element in a table is 55W = traditional incandescent light bulb (compare that with 13000 W of gas/propane terrace heaters). Halia warming is activated only when a person is sitting at the table. The feeling of warmth is achieved in tens of seconds. The warming automatically switches off when leaving the table.

" Would you rather consume 55W only when needed or 13 000W for several hours? "
